»Sariel then unleashed a mesmerizing solo performance of the famous Bach Chaconne in D minor [...] This is one of the finest Bach performances this reviewer has ever heard, blending pyrotechnics, calm and noble utterance and tragedy in equal measure.«

Biography

For the past decade, mandolinist and multi-instrumentalist Alon Sariel has been breathing new life into the mandolin, inspiring critics and audiences alike with his contagious musicianship and flawless technique, which makes him today's mandolinist of the first rank.

With a record of over a thousand concerts in more than 35 countries, including performances in Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, Brazil’s Sala São Paulo or Mexico‘s Palacio de Bellas Artes, he maintains a multifaceted career as a soloist, chamber player and artistic director in diverse productions.

With Sariel’s ever-growing curiosity for different cultures and genres, various plucked instruments find their way to his hands and often - "when it clicks", as he puts it - they come to stay. In his concerts, he easily switches between those “plucked partners” to create diverse musical experiences for his audiences.

In his current recording series "Plucked Bach" (PENTATONE), Alon Sariel approaches Bach's solo music in enticing new arrangements on different mandolins and lutes, the baroque guitar, oud and baglama. For the Beethoven anniversary in 2020, he was invited by Naxos to record the composer's works for mandolin and fortepiano. With his album "Telemandolin" (Berlin Classics) Sariel has become the first mandolinist to be awarded an OPUS KLASSIK.

Alon Sariel has been appointed Artistic Director of the concert series at 't Huis te Poort in the Netherlands. He is also a member of the Foundation Committee of the International Handel Festival in Göttingen.

Born in Israel and a Viennese by choice, he is a Goodwill Ambassador for the animal welfare organization Pro Animale. In his free time, he enjoys spending time in nature, reading or meditating.

Current Season

Conductor
In addition to his successful career as a soloist, Alon Sariel is increasingly incorporating conducting into his musical activities, both from the instrument and with the baton.

New Album
2025 will see his new release with PENTATONE - Vienna Mandolin Stories – bringing to light newly discovered works for mandolin and orchestra by the Viennese composer Ernest Krähmer, that lay untouched in the Bavarian State Library for over 200 years. Alongside these ‘old-new‘ gems, Sariel presents an original creation, Joseph Haydn’s “Mandolin Concerto”, which is based on various orchestral works by the composer.

Engagements
In 2025, Alon Sariel will be a soloist with the Swedish Västerås Sinfonietta (alongside conductor Bar Avni) and return to the Thüringen Philharmonie (play/conduct) with music by Mendelssohn, C.P.E. Bach and Telemann. Also, he will be special guest to the Schubertiade Tamba (Japan) and return to the UK to record Nimrod Borenstein’s mandolin concerto dedicated to him, with the English Chamber Orchestra.
His “Plucked Bach” recitals will be presented at the festivals Romanischer Sommer (WDR Cologne), the Thüringer Bachwochen, in Frankfurt’s Alte Oper and Potsdam’s Nikolaisaal.

Other highlights include Hummel’s mandolin concerto with conductor Sebastian Tewinkel in Brandenburg, an Artistic Residency in Amare and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, his debut in Armenia’s Kapan Festival and a new play/conduct program with the Bridges Kammerorchester in and around Frankfurt.
